Thank you so much. This really means a lot to me. I completely agree. When you have a pet and you grow to love it so much, they’re no different than any other family member really. I love her like a sister, I really do. She seems to have a lot more energy than she did a few hours ago, which is good. Hopefully she gets better soon. <3

This is my dog Sandy:

She became part of our family in the winter of 1999-2000. We’re pretty sure she’s a maltese-terrier mix. My whole family loves her to death.

Sandy is the smartest, cutest most adorable dog I know. She kind of resembles a bunch of cotton balls glued together.

We taught her a lot of tricks too. She likes to sing.

Sandy was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 4 years old and she was prescribed a drug called phenobarb. This medication really seemed to control her seizures well. Even at her age now, she isn’t on a particularly high dosage of the medication.

Unfortunately, Phenobarb is a medication that eventually causes damage to the liver. As a result, she’s had problems with skin infections (acne), which caused her fur to thin out. This condition was treatable with a drug called prednisone.

The medicine made her hungry all the time, so she gained a lot of weight— she had little sausage rolls on the back of her neck. ; u ;

Sandy is now 13 years old. For a dog with epilepsy, she’s lived a lot longer than doctors predicted.

Sadly, she’s been having to go to the vet a lot lately. We noticed some odd spotting on her skin, so when we brought her to the vet because of some broken warts on her ear, we asked the doctor to have a look at the spots on her skin.

She told us it was bruising. Bleeding under the skin. The vet took some blood samples and sent them away to be tested. Before they were sent away, they took a look at her blood, and noticed her platelet count was low. Sometimes dogs can ingest rat poison or pesticides, which can cause bruising like this. It didn’t make sense to me because we don’t use pesticides on our lawn and we don’t have rat poison around our house. She never leaves the yard. Ever. We have two heavily wooded building lots between us and both of our neighbours houses.

The tests came back and they were normal. No rat poison.

This could mean it’s something autoimmune (possibly caused by the phenobarb), or a problem with her bone marrow, like leukemia.

Before you say anything, I know she’s old. I know animals don’t live forever. I know.

But that dog has been a part of my life since I was seven years old. Thinking about something bad happening to her hurts me more than I can even explain.

It feels like my heart is breaking.

I’m hoping that whatever is going on with her is treatable.

The vet prescribed her some steriods to help increase her platelet count. They seem to be working, and the wound on her ear and side are healing up well.

But the steroids are making her really drowsy and dizzy so she’s been sleeping a lot.

I just hope my baby is okay. I love her so so much.
